Moving can feel overwhelming, but with the right plan, it doesn’t have to be. We’ve helped thousands of families relocate across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, and we’ve learned what works. Here’s the complete checklist we recommend to all our clients.
8 Weeks Before Moving Day
The earlier you start, the smoother your move will be. Use this time for the big decisions.
- Research moving companies – Get at least 3 quotes. Look for reviews, insurance coverage, and transparent pricing. (We’re here if you need us!)
- Create a moving binder or folder – Keep all your quotes, receipts, and important documents in one place.
- Start decluttering – Go room by room. Donate, sell, or toss items you no longer need. Less stuff = lower moving costs.
- Take inventory – Document valuable items with photos. This helps with insurance and organization.
6 Weeks Before
Time to lock in the logistics.
- Book your moving company – Especially during peak season (May-September), the best movers book up fast.
- Notify your landlord – Check your lease for the required notice period (usually 30-60 days in BC).
- Start collecting boxes – Ask local stores, use Facebook Marketplace, or get quality boxes from your moving company.
- Research your new neighborhood – Find the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, hospital, and schools.
4 Weeks Before
The packing begins in earnest.
- Begin packing non-essentials – Seasonal items, books, decor, and anything you won’t need for the next month.
- Label boxes clearly – Include the room AND contents. “Kitchen - Pots & Pans” is more helpful than just “Kitchen.”
- Arrange time off work – You’ll want at least moving day, plus a day to unpack essentials.
- Notify important parties – Employer, schools, doctors, dentists, and your vet.
2 Weeks Before
Address changes and utilities – the admin work nobody loves but everyone needs.
- Change your address – Canada Post, banks, credit cards, subscriptions, CRA, BC Services Card.
- Transfer or cancel utilities – BC Hydro, FortisBC, internet, phone. Schedule the switch for moving day.
- Clean out your fridge – Use up perishables. Plan simple meals for the final week.
- Confirm with your moving company – Reconfirm dates, times, and any special requirements.
1 Week Before
Final preparations.
- Pack an essentials box – Toiletries, medications, phone chargers, snacks, coffee maker, toilet paper. Keep this with you, not on the truck.
- Prepare for the movers – Clear pathways, reserve elevator time if needed, arrange parking.
- Take photos of electronics – Before unplugging, snap pics of how everything is connected.
- Say goodbye – Host a farewell gathering or visit favorite local spots one last time.
Moving Day
The big day is here. Deep breath – you’ve prepared for this.
- Be present – You don’t need to hover, but be available for questions.
- Do a final walkthrough – Check every closet, cabinet, and corner before leaving.
- Keep valuables with you – Important documents, jewelry, and irreplaceable items stay in your car.
- Tip your movers – Not required, but appreciated. $20-40 per mover is typical for excellent service.
After the Move
You made it! Now for the settling-in phase.
- Unpack essentials first – Bedroom, bathroom, kitchen. Everything else can wait.
- Update your driver’s license – You have 30 days to update your address with ICBC.
- Meet your neighbors – A quick hello goes a long way in building community.
- Explore your new area – Find your new favorite coffee shop, park, and shortcuts.
Vancouver-Specific Tips
A few things unique to moving in the Lower Mainland:
- Book elevator time – Most Vancouver buildings require it. Check with your strata or property manager.
- Watch for parking restrictions – Downtown and older neighborhoods have limited street parking. Consider reserving a spot with the City of Vancouver.
- Plan for weather – Rain is part of life here. Have tarps and plastic sheeting ready, just in case.
- Peak season is competitive – Summer and month-ends book up fast. The earlier you plan, the better your options.
