The BC brief

How moving in British Columbia is planned

British Columbia is planned around water and grade before it is planned around distance. Almost every Lower Mainland route crosses a bridge or a tunnel, the North Shore hangs on two crossings that set their own rhythm, and Vancouver Island sits behind a published sailing rather than a highway. A BC plan therefore starts by fixing the crossing — which one, at what hour, in which direction — and only then commits a truck to a street.

The second BC constant is the tower. From downtown Vancouver through Burnaby and New Westminster, high-rise strata buildings put a booked freight elevator, defined move-in hours and the building's own paperwork between the truck and the suite. Those bookings are calendar items with their own lead times, so the building file is opened the day the date is real, not the week of the move.

Eastbound, the province changes character at the mountains: the Coquihalla, the Okanagan Connector and the passes beyond carry weather that can re-time a day in either direction, and the written plan treats a summit the way it treats a sailing — as a fixed thing the schedule bends around. What a written route review does for a BC move is name each of these in advance: the crossing, the elevator window, the pass, and the doors at both ends.

Choosing between BC cities — what actually differs

The cities on this board are not interchangeable, and the differences are planning facts rather than taste. Vancouver reads bridge by bridge: the crossing chosen decides the hour more than the kilometres do. Surrey and the Fraser Valley run on ground grids where the long carry from truck to door, not the drive, is the variable worth scoping. Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities stack grade on top of elevators — hillside streets and tower bookings in the same move. Richmond puts a crossing at the start of nearly every route, White Rock adds a hill between the highway and the water, and Kelowna arrives over a summit that has a season.

Those differences are what a coordinator prices into the plan: crossings and their hours, elevator windows and their lead times, carry distance, parking and lane access, and — east of Hope — pass weather. Two BC moves of identical volume can be very different days for exactly these reasons, which is why the binding figure comes from a written review of your specific route rather than from a province-wide table.

Where BC routes lead beyond the province

The same board that plans a move within British Columbia extends past it. Eastbound corridors climb to Calgary over three summits or take the Yellowhead toward Edmonton; the long mainline runs coast to coast toward Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal with the planning arithmetic written per corridor; and the island crossing turns a Victoria move into a scheduled sailing rather than a drive. Between two homes — a sale that closes before a possession opens — storage holds the load under terms set out in writing.

Each corridor below carries its own page: the route read in full, the window it typically needs, and what the written review fixes before a truck is committed. That review is the constant across all of them.
